Platforms, Pathways and Pioneers: Oregon's Bioscience Progress

Oregon’s biotechnology and life science leaders are gathering on September 28 at Platforms, Pathways and Pioneers: Oregon’s Bioscience Progress, Oregon Bio’s Annual Conference, held this year at Portland State University’s newly remodeled, state-of-the art Smith Ballroom.

This year’s conference explores the future of personalized medicine, profiles the state’s innovation landscape, highlights successful partnerships/key investments in process, and outlines the steps being taken to develop our growing work force.

The day launches with local economic development experts in the Coffee for Success session, featuring  City of Beaverton Mayor Dennis Doyle, Portland Community College President David Rule and Welch Allyn’s Vice President of Operations West, Peter Murray.

This year’s unprecedented three keynote presentations feature three globally renowned speakers:

Harvard’s medical school director, Dr. Thomas Stossel, a hematology researcher, medical pioneer, and industry collaborations expert, will deliver his inimitable morning keynote in exploration of successful physician-industry collaborations and positing if conflicts of interest really do exist?  He’ll bring his decades of work in the Translational Medicine Unit at the Center for Medical Innovation, and as a senior physician at the Hematology Division Brigham and Women's Hospital.




Oregon’s own newest cancer research luminary, Dr. Joe Gray, will bring the latest news on the healing work and discovery going on at his lab.  Dr. Gray came to OHSU in 2010 and serves as the director for Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine as well as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at OHSU’s School of Medicine.




Life Technologies' Brian McKelligon, Vice President, Global Sales and Support, will discuss how semi-conductor technology is changing the future of gene sequencing and the diagnosis of disease.  Mr. McKelligon currently runs the global commercial efforts for Ion Torrent (acquired by Life Technologies in October of 2010), with nearly 20 years of sales, business development and marketing experience in the life sciences.  He has extensive experience in building commercial organizations and introducing new technologies to the life sciences market


 

Four track/break out sessions will focus participants on the future of personalized medicine, building Oregon’s talent pool and work force, studying successful examples of Oregon start ups, and creating successful cross-functional partnerships. Track attendees will hear from MolecularMD, Siga Technologies, Preciva, Blacktoe Medical, Oregon State University, Willamette Valley Cancer Institute, SAM Medical, Pfizer Corp, UbiVac, DesignMedix, University of Portland, and Legacy Health Clinical Research.

BIO’s President and CEO, James Greenwood, will be on hand with to define the global focus of BIO’s public policy and will be joined by Oregon Bio’s Advocacy Committee chairs, Jack Isselmann of Tonken Torp and Jennifer Stoll of Allergan, to discuss Oregon’s policy success and the path going forward.

The Oregon Bio annual conference always provides attendees with the opportunity to meet an interesting cross-section of exhibitors, representing industry-leading companies, supplies and service providers.  The conference will close with an early evening keynote and networking reception as well as the not-to-be-missed poster session showcasing our local innovation in process.
