Each year, the U.S. Government purchases billions of dollars in goods and services. Selling to the federal government can be a profitable avenue for increasing or diversifying a company’s revenues. But, the government’s procurement procedures differ significantly from typical commercial practices, frequently involving complex regulations and compliance obligations. Companies seeking to enter the federal marketplace often underestimate the resources required to participate in public contracts. This seminar will provide an easy-to-understand overview of the government procurement process and the headline issues that companies often face when taking on a government contract.

Presenters:
Craig A. Crotteau and James C. Bradshaw are Special Counsel with the law firm Ball Janik LLP.
Craig serves as an advocate for clients before Congress and key Federal agency decisionmakers. He provides strategic insights on Federal legislation and agency programs, helping clients develop and implement their strategic marketing initiatives. Craig focuses on Department of Defense agencies, and also has significant experience with the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. He assists public ports and private developers with infrastructure, land use and real estate matters.
James supports companies in pursuing and performing contracts with military and civilian agencies of governments throughout the world. He helps clients understand the complexities of U.S. government procurement regulations and implement solutions designed to facilitate compliance with such regulations. He represents companies operating at both the prime contract and subcontract level, as well as those selling to governments directly or through an intermediary.

He is responsible for the Bank’s Oregon-based lending team; serving technology companies in the Oregon and Idaho markets. Prior to joining S.V.B. Ron was a Vice President with First Interstate Bank. He held various positions during his 20-year career with First Interstate, all of which were in commercial lending. Ron holds an undergraduate degree in Finance from The University of Oregon and graduated with honors from Pacific Coast Banking School held at the University of Washington.

He has extensive experience working with technology, life sciences, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, retail and property management risks. Mark is a licensed insurance agent in the states of Oregon, Washington, California and Colorado. Prior to joining Insurance Partners, Mark worked for Marsh and Willis, both global insurance brokers.
Akana Ma is a partner with the Ater Wynne law firm in Portland. Akana works with companies and individuals conducting business in the global marketplace to help structure international joint ventures; comply with foreign laws and regulations; license and protect technology, trademarks, software and other intellectual property; contract for the sale and distribution of products and services; establish foreign offices, license and finance exports; comply with customs and import laws and regulations; and negotiate and draft commercial contracts. He has practiced international law for more than 20 years.
