Oregon Health & Science University has a bigger economic footprint in this state than Oregon State or Portland State universities, according to a study scheduled for release today.

The report, prepared by consulting firm ECONorthwest, pegged OHSU’s net economic impact in Oregon at $2.4 billion, and found that the university’s presence has brought the state 20,625 jobs, paying an average of $52,000.

Earlier studies estimated Oregon State’s impact at $1.5 billion, and Portland State’s at $1.2 billion.

OHSU officials said the study is justification for the $37 million the university receives from the state’s general fund each year.

Jobs linked to the hospital and university system generate an estimated $180 million per year in state income tax, said Steve Stadum, OHSU executive vice president.

Among the report’s findings:

OHSU draws more non-local patients than any hospital in the Portland metro area, with 41 percent of adult in-patients traveling from outside the area.

lf OHSU did not exist, other hospitals would treat many of its patients, but 35 percent of the region’s patient care revenue would go to Seattle, California or other regional research hospitals.

That would amount to a loss of $333 million of OHSU’s $950 million in patient revenue.

The university attracts more than $300 million per year in research funding.

In many ways, said Dan Dorsa, vice president for research, OHSU can be viewed like a corporate headquarters.

“The kind of people who are attracted to come to Oregon and work for OHSU bring a lot of intellectual capital with them,” Dorsa said. “They add to the richness of the community.”
