(Albany, Ore.)-  The surprising results of a new study1 show a safe, non-toxic solution, which is widely available over the counter, is effective at treating head lice infestations. A simple solution used by a growing number of consumers, shows the naturally occurring ingredient sodium chloride is safe for adults and children.

The preliminary study compared the results of applying sodium chloride versus permethrin, a synthetic insecticide. Many lice treatments use permethrin, which has been a standard lice treatment for decades. The study compared permethrin against Licefreee® Spray® non-toxic sodium chloride solution.

Oregon State University professor, J. Mark Christensen, Ph.D., who advises companies developing head lice treatments, notes the results came from a “succinct, unambiguous study that reveals the strengths of a non-toxic spray in treating head lice.”

Dr. Christensen explains the study. “Forty-two subjects were randomized equally into two groups, one using the permethrin crème rinse and one using the non-toxic sodium chloride spray. The products were applied to hair according to the label instructions.”  He added that the results “showed significantly higher elimination of lice with the spray (85%) as compared to the permethrin (45%) at Day 15.”

Mother of three children, Wendy Langley, who developed the non-toxic Licefreee® Spray at Tec Laboratories Inc., (http://www.teclabsinc.com/) was determined to find a highly potent and safe way to treat her family’s head lice.  Now the regulatory affairs director at Tec Labs, she says, “I am pleased the study results show the spray works on both lice and nits. This is the result of extensive experimentation in the laboratory, which was confirmed by an independent lab.  The clinical trial backs this up.”

Garland, Texas mother Michelle Stuyvesant shared, “My teenage daughter was working with a kindergarten class three days a week and caught the bugs from one of the students. I remembered a friend mentioning Licefreee Spray so we asked her about it.  She said it was not like the typical chemical products and much easier to use, so we gave it a try.  With one application of the spray she had no more problems with nits or live bugs.”

Adds Tec Labs’ President Steve Smith, “This study is exciting for us because it shows the effectiveness of a non-toxic approach in a real world scenario.” He adds, “Over the years we’ve learned the only thing that matters to a parent battling head lice is whether or not a product works. This study objectively proves that Licefreee Spray is one of those rare products that actually does what it says.”
